Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians

Application Process First-come, first-served basis for eligible applicants (early registration recommended). Notification in March.
Program Mission Increase the capacity of library directors to lead and manage. Participants are prepared to answer 2 key questions: How well-positioned is my organization to meet current and future challenges? How effective is my own leadership?
Target Audience The Institute is limited to those with significant administrative responsibility in an institution of higher education, and who show high promise for making a significant contribution in the future.  Registration from library directors, university librarians, and their associates and direct reports will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Number of Participants 94 in 2006 from 33 states and 4 foreign countries
Format Institute faculty use various teaching techniques: presentations, discussion, videos, exercises, and case studies. Themes will be interwoven from one class to another. Faculty members will be available after classes and at meals to meet with you, continue discussions begun in class, talk shop, and share ideas. You will be assigned to a daily discussion group to facilitate your learning outside of class and to foster application of institute concepts to the challenges faced on your own campus.
Leadership Focus area Characteristics of effective leadership in academic organizations, transformational learning, planning, and organizational strategy and change.
Cost The comprehensive program fee of $2300 covers tuition, all program and instructional materials, refreshment breaks, lunch daily, an opening reception, and social events during the week. Participants are expected to have the endorsement of the institution you represent. Ordinarily, this is reflected in full financial support. Room reservations are the responsibility of individual conference participants. Accommodations will be made available to participants at a reduced rate in the coming months.
Existing Scholarships Two scholarships are available for individuals currently working in Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges or Universities, or those employed at Hispanic Serving Institutions.

Immersion

Application Process Applications will be reviewed by the ACRL Institute for Information Literacy Executive Committee, and notifications will be issued in February.
Program Mission Institute for Information Literacy has three basic goals:
   1. Prepare librarians to become effective teachers in information literacy programs;
   2. Support librarians, other educators and administrators in playing a leadership role in the development and implementation of information literacy programs;
   3. Forge new relationships throughout the educational community to work towards information Literacy curriculum development.
Target Audience TEACHER TRACK.  This track focuses on individual development for those who are interested in enhancing, refreshing, or extending their individual instruction skills. PROGRAM TRACK.  This track focuses on developing, integrating, and managing institutional and programmatic information literacy programs. INTENTIONAL TEACHER TRACK. This track is aimed at the experienced academic librarian (5+ years teaching experience, in a library or other setting) who wants to become more self-aware and self-directed as a teacher. 
Number of Participants Seems to be 50-75 between the two tracks
Format Immersion is 3.5 (INTENTIONAL TEACHER TRACK) or 4.5 (TEACHER and PROGRAM TRACKS) days of active learning and intensive interaction among academic librarians.
Leadership Focus area PROGRAM TRACK.  This track focuses on developing, integration, and managing institutional and programmatic information literacy programs. Participants selected for the Program Track will develop individual case studies in advance of the Immersion program. Change dynamics, systems thinking, institutional outcomes assessment, scalability, and the integration of teaching, learning, and technology will be brought to bear on analyzing the various programmatic challenges presented in the case studies. Immersion participants will be expected to develop the case studies into an action plan for implementation at the home institution.

Frye Leadership Institute

Duration Two week residential program
Application Process Individuals have to be nominated,  nominees are notified and they then are encouraged to apply to the Institute 
Program Mission The Institute offers participants the opportunity to explore and analyze the leadership challenges stemming from the changing context and complexity of higher education. 
Target Audience Participants must be nominated by a member of the institution's senior leadership and will be selected competitively from among applicants who have a commitment to, and talent for, leadership within higher education. The group as a whole will be chosen to reflect the variety of backgrounds and diverse expertise that constitute higher education. 
Cost The only charge to participants is $4000 to cover their personal lodging and meal expenses at the Institute.  All other expenses are covered by the Institute.

Certificate of Advanced Study

Program Mission Librarians, information scientists, and others in information management enroll in the program to refresh and update their skills, gain greater specialization in their professional training, or redirect their careers from one area to another. In addition to the formal digital libraries concentration, other examples of areas of concentration include library and information center administration, information technology, and information management. An area of concentration might also be a specific library function such as children's services, government information, science information, or technical services.
Target Audience M.L.I.S. degree holders looking for advanced training

Senior Fellows at UCLA

Program Mission A professional development program for senior level academic librarians. The program offers a unique combination of management perspectives, strategic thinking, and practical and theoretical approaches to the issues confronting academic institutions and their libraries.
Target Audience Senior level academic librarians

Format The Senior Fellows program is an intensive three-week residential program structured around a variety of learning experiences: lectures, guest speakers, case studies, field trips, and informal group study sessions. Sessions are held each morning, with afternoons usually devoted to study and recreation although some formal sessions will be scheduled. Fellows will be asked to prepare at least one assignment in advance of arrival in Los Angeles; and a follow-up project will be negotiated during the session. Some program topics will be derived from the statements of purpose prepared by fellows to respond to the individual participants' interests.
Leadership Focus area Management, strategy, networking & peer support
Cost $6500 includes tuition, books, materials, lodging, breakfast and dinner, scheduled field trips, parking fees for those with cars, and use of the group van.

Northern Exposure to Leadership Institute

Location Emerald Lake Lodge in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, Canada (Calgary, Alberta airport with a bus to the lodge)

Application Process Must be nominated by school, employer, or organization. Then submit application (cover letter, nomination letter, recommendation, statement of goals, and resume).
Program Mission To motivate professional librarians in order to assist them in developing, strengthening and exercising their individual leadership abilities so that they are better prepared to create, articulate and achieve organizational visions for the benefit of library service, initially, and society at large, ultimately. 
Target Audience Librarians with accredited MLS; should have at least 2 years professional experience and preferably completed the MLS no more than 7 years ago. "An institute by and for Canada's Library Leaders"

Format Based on the premise of experiential learning, the Institute includes group and individual exercises, as well as the opportunity to learn in conversation with mentors, who have been chosen for their own leadership skills, and who will be participating as volunteers
Leadership Focus area model leadership, group work, team building and collegiality; engage participants in a discussion about leadership, what it means, how it is recognized, developed and sustained; expose participants to a variety of leadership styles, including those that are innovative and may fall outside of traditional North American/European thought; engage participants in a discussion about vision, what it means, how it is communicated and how it is achieved; assist participants in learning to manage change by making creative connections in order to create opportunities for themselves as individuals as well as for their profession; provide participants an opportunity to learn from team-based approaches; be premised in a theoretical framework which will permeate the Institute in order to provide a consistent foundation upon which subsequent learning may be built.
Cost $1400 registration, plus transportation expenses. Meals, accomodations, and materials are provided.

Academic Library Leadership

Program Mission: "The institute focuses on the higher education context in which libraries exist. It explores new roles for libraries that may emerge from that context to support the goals and priorities of the parent institution. Participants identify ways to position their libraries to be agents for change withing their institutions, in orger to strengthen support for the library's services and resources."
Target Audience: Librarians in higher education institutions.

Format lectures, panel presentations, speakers (2/3) and group work focused on case study analyses and preparation for the following day (1/3).
Leadership Focus area The institute derives its content from the book Higher Education and the Internet Age: Libraries Creating a Strategic Edge, by Patricia Senn Breivik and Gordon Gee. "The focus on understanding leadership and the external environment, coupled with an in depth understanding of the higher education context of libraries, distinguishes Venderbilt's institute from others, which emphasize management skills and the internal library organization." Curricular domains include: future of higher ed, role of library, strategic planning, human resources issues, library as place, relationship between fundraising and strategic planning, and assessment.
Cost $1895 includes all materials, most meals, housing in a Vanderbilt lodge, and all social events of the week.

Leadership Certificate
