Scripture References as Subject Headings

A. Uniform Titles for Books of the Bible

  If the subject refers to the Bible as a whole or to individual books, use the following forms. Always use Arabic numbering when there is more than one book with the same name. For example,

B. Scripture Citations

§         Input biblical citations in ATLA scripture citation style. This will ensure that citations file properly both within a givern file and across all files in the database.

§         Give the numbers in scripture citations (cardinal and ordinal) in Arabic form.

 §         Separate the chapter number from verse number(s) by a colon and a space. For example,

 John 1: 1

 §         If a citation straddles complete chapters of the same book of the Bible input both chapter numbers connected with a hyphen and close up any spaces. For example,

 Jeremiah 2-3

 §         If a citation straddles chapters and verses within the same book of the Bible input the opening portion of the citation followed by a hyphen and then input the second part of the citation. Close up any spaces before and after the hyphen. For example,

 Luke 18: 15-19:21

  1. If a citation straddles only verses within the same chapter input the verse numbers joined with a hyphen. Close up any spaces before and after the hyphen. For example,

Luke 18: 1-8

  1. If the verses cited are not continuous input the verse numbers separated with commas. Do not leave a space after the comma. For example,

Exodus 3: 1-8,10-15

§         If a citation straddles two or more books of the Bible make separate entries for each book. For example,

Citation in work:  1st Kings 22:39-2nd Kings 1

Subject 1: Kings, 1st 22: 39-54

Subject 2: Kings, 2nd 1

§         Do not end the field with a mark of punctuation.
