Lithograph of James Pettigru Boyce. 1881. On January 11, 1827, James Pettigru Boyce was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He attended Charleston College for two years before entering Brown University, from which he graduated in 1847. Upon being baptized in 1846, Boyce joined with the First Baptist Church at Charleston. He edited the Southern Baptist for six months before entering Princeton Theological Seminary in 1849. Boyce was ordained pastor of the Baptist church in Columbia, South Carolina in 1851. In 1855 he became a Furman University professor, where he remained until he was elected professor in the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1858 and 1859. Boyce served two terms in the South Carolina Legislature, beginning in 1862. He published several works including: A Brief Catechism on Bible Doctrines, The Doctrine and Uses of the Sanctuary, Death and Life the Christian’s Portion, and The Suffering Christ.
