Description: Lithograph of William Carey. 1881. William Carey was born in Purvey, Northamptonshire, England on August 17, 1761. He was baptized on October 5, 1783; and ordained pastor of the Baptist church at Moulton in 1787. Carey was entirely self-educated and extremely proficient in several languages. After reading the voyages of Captain Cook, Carey felt called to preach the Gospel to the heathen. He wrote a pamphlet entitled “An Inquiry into the Obligation of Christians to Use Means for the Conversion of the Heathen.” In 1789 Carey became the pastor of the church at Leicester, out of which he would go to India. He traveled to India with the Danish East India Company, and there learned the language and served as a missionary. Due to his proficiency in the native languages, Carey wrote several grammars of the various regional languages and also translated the New Testament into many of them. He became professor at the College of Fort William in Calcutta. Carey died in India on June 9, 1834. JPG file (393 KB)
