Cataloguing Librarian

Introduction:
The Blessed Edmund Rice School for Pastoral Ministry (www.riceschool.org), located just outside of Port Charlotte, Florida (3.7 miles from I-75 exit 170), is a satellite of Barry University in Miami Shores, FL. It offers a M.A. in Pastoral Theology. In support of this graduate degree, it maintains a theological library. Currently, this library contains just over 9,000 volumes, but the long-term goal is to grow to between 30-32,000 volumes.  

Position Summary:
The Rice School is seeking a part-time (10 hours per week; 40 per month) cataloguing librarian. This librarian will help us develop an appropriate collection policy, facilitate the introduction of an electronic checkout system, and generally help us maintain and develop the collection. 

Requirements:
M.L.S. and cataloguing experience are required.

Access and Digital Services Librarian

Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, Indiana (posted 10/19/09)

Introduction:
The Library of Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, Indiana, seeks an innovative, energetic and service-oriented librarian for the position of Access and Digital Services Librarian. The AMBS Library serves primarily seminary faculty and students enrolled in master’s level courses.

 

Position Summary:
The Access and Digital Services Librarian will lead the library’s efforts to effectively use current and emerging technologies in the provision of information services and resources. Responsibilities include supervision of circulation and interlibrary loan.   The Access and Digital Services Librarian participates in providing reference service and user education.  The position is currently .8 FTE although this may increase within three years.

 

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Day-to-day supervision in the areas of circulation, course reserves and interlibrary loan including customizing the Aleph circulation module and generating reports.
  • Hiring and scheduling student employees.  Training and supervising them in access and reference services. Preparing and maintaining documentation of related library procedures.
  • Identifying, evaluating, acquiring and providing convenient access to digital resources for the library’s collection.
  • Planning, implementing, and promoting innovative uses of current and emerging technologies in support of the library’s public services and internal processes.
  • Joining the library director to provide reference and instructional services including the design and maintenance of the library’s OPAC and Website.

Education:

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program at the time of appointment is required.
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in religion or theology is highly desirable.

Desired Experience:

  • Managing circulation, interlibrary loan and course reserves in an academic library using the features of an integrated library automation system (Ex Libris Aleph).
  • Hiring, scheduling, training and supervising student workers.
  • Managing electronic resources in an academic library.
  • Designing and maintaining a library Web site.
  • Providing academic library reference service.
  • Information literacy instruction including the creation of print and digital teaching resources.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • A working knowledge of current and emerging technologies and their applications for library resources and services.
  • A working knowledge of the print and online reference resources related to the disciplines represented in the seminary's curriculum.
  • Strong technological aptitude and skills.
  • Ability to train and supervise student employees.
  • Ability to think strategically about change and to implement improvements in library resources and services.
  • Strong organizational skills along with the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.

The successful candidate must enjoy working with people, possess pastoral and professional sensitivities as well as a love of learning and teaching. The person must also demonstrate enthusiasm, flexibility and creativity in serving library patrons, and an ability to communicate clearly in writing and speaking.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary (based on 32 hours/week) - $28,000 – $32,000 depending on experience. Full benefits include health insurance, retirement and disability.

Information Services Assistant

The American Theological Library Association, a professional association of theological libraries and librarians, has an immediate opening for a part-time Information Services Assistant. 

Position Summary
This position assists ATLA staff with technical support of desktop computers, applications, and related technology. Support includes installation and troubleshooting of computer systems and peripherals. Activities require interaction with application software and operating systems to diagnose and resolve unique, non-recurring problems. The position utilizes one-on-one consultancy with internal staff. The employee in this position also assists in the maintenance and testing of network servers and associated equipment.

Cataloguing Librarian

Introduction:
St. Paul University in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada seeks a Cataloguing Librarian for the Jean-Léon Allie, O.M.I. Library.

Duties:

Cataloguing

  • Under the general guidelines established in the cataloguing policies and procedures, enter data in MARC format and adapt those records to AACR2 rules applicable in a specialized library environment;
  • Create series records and analytical entries; catalogue and classify materials acquired by the Library, in particular in the collection of microforms; perform full original cataloguing of books and materials when required.

Policies and Procedures

  • Maintain a continuing review of all policies and procedures in effect in the service and recommend to the Chief Librarian changes where needed; update and keep current methods, procedures and cataloguing tools required to catalogue and classify books and other materials;
  • With the other Librarians, act as a resource person for the interpretation of established policies and procedures;
  • Verify and suggest resources and tools to improve the work flow of the Library.

Choice of Books

In collaboration with the other Librarians, and taking into account the suggestions made by professors, as well as to support the University curriculum, select and choose books, microforms, second-hand books, rare books, periodicals and other materials for the current and retrospective collection development of the Library.

Reference Service

Provide reference and research assistance at a centralized reference desk on a weekly basis including some evenings and/or weekends; answer direct, telephone, mail and email questions regarding books in general and our printed collections in particular; participate in the Library’s Instruction Program.

Collection Enhancement    

  • Determine the criteria that will guide the choice of rare books to be digitized; upgrade as required those criteria;
  • Create a catalogue of the rare books owned by the Library and develop a digitization program, choose the rare books to be digitized according to the established criteria;
  • Plan and organise the preservation of the Library collections by (1) creating a Preservation policy ; (2) considering the digitalization as one option ; (3) indicating means to disseminate these data in a patron-friendly environment (the question of easy access to non-seeing patrons is a key element);
  • Prepare subject bibliographies (path finders), research guides, or articles;
  • Participate in the creation and training of Information Literacy Seminars and other workshops;
  • Create and develop a Ask-a-Librarian service;
  • Develop information tools for our clientele using Web 2.0 applications;
  • Find new ways to deliver library services;
  • Prepare exhibits on a regular basis.

Others

  • Plan their professional development and inform their supervisor of their needs and different opportunities that arise.;
  • Participates in appropriate local, regional, and national associations.

Job Summary:

  • Under the general guidelines established by the Chief Librarian, and in collaboration with the other Librarians and the cataloguing work group, the incumbent will catalogue and classify all materials acquired by the Library. As an Academic Librarian, the incumbent will provide support to members of our academic community (students, professors, researchers and lecturing staff).
  • Supervise the three (3) members of his team.

Specific Duties:

A. Cataloguing - 60%

  1. Conform to the common section of duties.
  2. Performs original and complex copy cataloguing for a wide range of formats, including online resources. Employs traditional cataloguing principles and practices in description, classification, subject analysis, and authority control, as well as emerging metadata schemas (Dublin Core) used to make electronic and other resources accessible;
  3. Serves as coordinator of the cataloguing department ; convenes departmental meetings ; stays abreast of new developments relevant to the department's work, and keeps such developments at the forefront of the department's priorities and vision ; coordinates and facilitates workflow and decision-making within and between departments ; completes job evaluations according to library and Human Ressources procedures ; serves as a resource person concerning OCLC, cataloguing, classification, database maintenance, record loading and workflow issues;
  4. Works collaboratively with all staff in technical services (acquisitions, and serials) as well as with other segments of the library, and university on information organization & access needs;
  5. Prepares statistical reports and other management reports on cataloguing;
  6. Devotes a few hours per month to cataloguing material from the Ottawa Psychoanalytical Society and Goethe Institute or any other organization's collection that will be housed in the Library;
  7. Within the context of cataloguing rules and procedures, create authority records for authors, corporate authors and uniform titles; update those rules and procedure as needed;
  8. Establish new bilingual subject authorities using principally but not exclusively the Library of Congress and Laval University list of subject headings; In collaboration with the other cataloguer, resolve subject and classification conflicts arising during the automation of the Saint Paul University list of subject headings.

B. Policies and Procedures - 10%

Conform to the common section of duties, specifically the library’s cataloguing policies, procedures, methods and work tools must be kept up-to-date for the cataloguing of microforms, second-hand books and electronic documents.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • Master in Library Science or it’s equivalent;
  • Bachelor or graduate degree in theology or philosophy;
  • Experience oriented toward cataloguing or indexing;
  • Excellent knowledge of MARC format and AACR2 rules;
  • Experience in collection development would be an asset;
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret the rules and procedures of cataloguing, especially with regard to non-traditional platforms;
  • Excellent computer skills, with knowledge of word processing and data management software;
  • Integral bilingualism; Excellent knowledge of both spoken and written English and French;

Knowledge of Latin, classical Greek and Hebrew, of other European languages other than English and French would be an asset.

Nature of Position and Accountability:
The Cataloguing Librarian assumes overall responsibility for cataloguing, including all formats (books, periodicals, rare books, manuscripts, archives, electronic materials, digitized material, etc.) metadata development and quality control, policy and procedures development (especially knowledge of RDA vs. MARC21), standards and maintenance in this area. The incumbent trains, supervises and develops all primary cataloguing functions in a network environment provided by SirsiDynix: Unicorn and its interface WorkFlows.

  • Sensory attention: Frequent need to concentrate his(her) attention to written documents (namely in foreign languages), on a computer screen and with information provided verbally by colleagues or patrons. Particularly intense concentration when searching in a database, which interface is in a foreign language.
  • Mental stress: Work is varied and changing. Stress involved more specifically in the choice of books where allocated sums must be spent in a timely manner, on a specific date and on a specific subject. Stress is also involved in the proper coding of bibliographic records since these records are simultaneously accessible on the Internet, on the Web.
