Digitization Specialist

Introduction:
The American Theological Library Association (ATLA), a professional association of theological libraries and librarians that also produces key electronic products for the scholarly study of religion and theology, has an immediate opening for a full-time Digitization Specialist in the Electronic Products and Services department. The position offers an opportunity to work with current trends in digital formats and usage; scanning and digital processing workflows; serials management; and digital preservation. 

Position Summary:
Responsibilities include Serials Management tasks such as organizing  and identifying needed journal issues;  working with EPS and Index staff to ensure acquisition of issues and synchronization of indexing and digital materials; and reviewing, collating, and disbinding issues prior to digitization. Digitization tasks include learning and analyzing digital object software packages, hardware, standards, or formats; scanning journal issues for ATLASerials® (ATLAS®); preparing full text PDFs utilizing OCR software;  QA testing and fixing of digital files,  full text, and procedures created in-house or received from publishers; training part-time staff in digitization procedures; and working with ATLAS team members to set and ensure adherence to standard configuration settings, guidelines, and workflows for generating access level and preservation quality digital files.

Required Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate degree
  • Experience and proficiency with computers, including standard office application programs (e.g. MS Access, MS Excel, MS Word, MS Outlook)
  • Ability to learn and understand new technology, procedures, digital formats, and standards quickly
  • Organized detail-oriented person who can easily switch tasks and can concentrate on the task at hand to provide consistent, accurate, and  timely work when conducting repetitious tasks in an atmosphere with firm deadlines
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team
  • Ability to analyze, troubleshoot and innovate technical procedures
  • Physical ability to turn pages, position journals on scanners, visually review image quality, and to operate a manual paper cutter requiring 20 lbs. of pressure

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MLS from an accredited institution or at least one year of graduate work in library science studies or equivalent experience
  • Familiarity with some of the hardware or software used to create, process and check the quality of digital objects such as: high speed duplex scanners; book cradle scanners; KOFAX Ascent; Adobe Creative Suite; ABBYY Recognition Server OCR software; CuadraStar, digital asset management systems, XML editing tools; Polyview; Gradual PowerSwitch; or Enfocus Pitstop
  • Knowledge of serial publishing patterns
  • Familiarity with digital formats and standards such as PDF, PDF/A, Tiff, or Gif
  • Knowledge of digital preservation issues or digital metadata such as XMP, EXIF, or IPTC
  • Understanding of the processes, tools, and standards publishers use in generating digital files, such as PDF/X, Unicode character maps, Adobe Glyphs, or preflighting

Position Summary:

Digitization/Data Entry Assistant

The American Theological Library Association, a professional association of theological libraries and librarians, has an immediate opening for a full-time Digitization/Data Entry Assistant. This position offers a chance to learn about scanners, scanning software, and creation of preservation-quality digital images as well as data entry in the MARC 21 format.

Position Summary:
Digitization responsibilities include scanning journal issues for our web-based ATLASerials application. Primary tasks include inventorying, collating, disbinding, scanning, and processing journal issues. Other tasks may include copying images; QA testing of images and full text and web application; and preparing full text utilizing OCR software. Opportunities may arise to assist with other EPS products and services. Approx. 6 hours per week.

Data entry responsibilities include inputting brief author, title, publication, and pagination information from books and/or journal articles in MARC 21 format utilizing ATLA’s implementation of the CuadraSTAR® system; inputting predetermined processing codes in records; linking brief records to existing serial issue or book records; and verifying data input to ensure accuracy of completed work. This position will also assist in the acquisitions process and work with staff member(s) on authority records and headings. Approx. 31.5 hours per week.

Position Summary:
This is a new position requiring an individual that can design, develop, and implement a digital library program.  Using innovation and creativity, oversees digital services and initiatives including grant funded digital projects.  Working collaboratively with colleagues and member institutions, provides expertise to deliver services in support of teaching, learning and research.  Program will promote the resources and services in support of the Atlanta University Center (AUC) community and beyond. Develops best practices, policies and procedures for digital asset creation and management.

Essential Duties:

  • Responsible for the design, development, and implementation of digital services for the library. 
  • Coordinates projects that develop or enhance academic and digital library systems and services in support of teaching, learning and research of the AUC community

The Robert W. Woodruff Library of the Atlanta University Center is an organization that is undergoing transformation and is poised for excellence. The library is seeking an enthusiastic and energized professional for the position of Theology Librarian.

Position Summary and Essential Duties:
The Theology Librarian serves as library liaison for all aspects of the academic program at The Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) and as the liaison for religious studies at the other member institutions of the Robert W. Woodruff Library of the Atlanta University Center. This individual will be largely responsible for our compliance with ATS and other accreditation bodies. In this liaison role, opportunities may also exist for leadership of editorial activities of the Journal of the Interdenominational Theological Center.

The Interdenominational Theological Center is a graduate theological seminary with six distinct seminaries. ITC serves as a graduate theological seminary with a student population of returning adult learners and a growing distance learning program. 

The successful candidate is the liaison responsible for the development of the collection and programs,  provision of  informational resources and instructional services in the areas of religion, theology, and philosophy, to the faculties, staff, and students of the Atlanta University Center member institutions in general and specifically to the faculty, staff, and students of the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC). The Theology Librarian will develop instructional and materials that can be accessed by campus and distance learners.

The successful candidate will work with colleagues to develop resources and instructional strategies appropriate for returning adult graduate learners at the Interdenominational Theological Center; participate in grant development and implementation; participate in the development, implementation, and assessment of library services, policies, procedures, and publications, serve on relevant committees of the library and ITC faculty; establish collaborative relationships with other institutions for the purposes of scholarly discourse.   

Requirements:

  • ALA-accredited graduate degree in library science required
  • A graduate degree in theological studies or another pertinent discipline preferred
  • Grant writing experience desirable

Collection Development Coordinator

Position Summary:
The Robert W. Woodruff Library of the Atlanta University Center is searching for a Collection Development Coordinator. This position requires a high energy individual that will set the strategy, develop policy, planning, implementation, and assessment for collection development activities, including working collaboratively with Library subject liaisons, departmental faculty, and consortial partners in the metro Atlanta area. This position is a non-tenure/non-faculty position and reports to the Deputy Director.

Essential Duties:
The successful candidate will develop and coordinate planned collection development strategies including assessment, selection, and de-selection of print, non-print, and electronic monographic and serial library resources and gifts in all subject areas; manage the materials budget and allocate money to subject funds; review trends in resource pricing; make recommendations to library administration for budget adjustments; participate in activities in support of accreditation at the institutional and departmental levels; provide outreach to faculty, including, serving as liaison for academic program/departments in subject areas supporting the curriculum and research needs of the member institutions; provide reference and research services to the students and faculty members of the general AUC community; work with vendors to establish appropriate profiles for acquisition of resources; identify and develop appropriate collection reports and provides analysis for same; serve as the Chair of the Collection Development Committee.

Requirements:

  • Graduate degree in library science from an ALA accredited program required.
  • Experience working with an integrated library system required; experience working with the ExLibris Voyager system preferred.
  • 2-3 years experience in an academic library performing collection development and/or acquisitions responsibilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends, issues, and best practices in academic library collection development, scholarly communications, and assessment

Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education invites applications for a full-time Technical Services Librarian in its William Smith Morton Library. Union-PSCE is a theological school of the Presbyterian Church (USA) with an extensive library collection of Christian education, multimedia, electronic and print resources.

Position Summary:
The Technical Services Librarian is responsible for all aspects of cataloging, serials, and materials processing and preservation as well as the training and supervision of permanent and student staff who assist in this work using the library’s ExLibris Aleph system.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have an ALA-accredited MLS, a knowledge of cataloging standards and technology, and a facility for working in a team-oriented environment. Attention to detail and an ability to analyze workflow are required. Theological training is highly desirable as well as a facility with foreign languages.

Preservation Assistant

Introduction:
The Preservation Assistant performs a variety of services in support of ATLA’s preservation grants and projects. This position is a two-year grant-funded position and reports to the Manager of Preservation Projects. 

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • searching bibliographic utilities to retrieve information about preservation titles
  • searching remote library catalogs on-site and via modem and the Internet; 
  • work obtaining, collating, and returning materials for preservation
  • performing quality assurance on preservation formats, including microfilm and digital objects
  • evaluating and submitting invoices 
  • maintaining metadata regarding the materials preserved

Peripheral duties may also involve the physical retrieval and basic organization of items for the ATLA Archives.  

Qualifications:
Applicants possessing a college degree in the humanities or social sciences are preferred. They should also have excellent communication skills, excellent record-keeping skills, basic computer skills (including word processing, reliable database file management and data entry), demonstrated organizational skills, and the ability to understand bibliographic records.
