Operating Systems for the Windows Version of ATLA RDB on CD-ROM

Note: ATLA will no longer be producing the ATLA RDB on CD-ROM.  The last CD-ROM version will be released in September 2008, and support will end in February 2009.  RDB is available online via aggregators.

How do I install the Windows CD-ROM on an operating system other than Microsoft Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, and Novell 4.1x?

The operating systems supported for use with the Windows ATLA Religion Database CD-ROM are listed in our catalog as Microsoft Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, and Novell 4.1x. These are the operating systems that the software was designed for and tested with initially; however, ATLA continues to work with customers to determine ways that the application may be used on new or different operating systems. If you are interested in ways to use the ATLA Religion Database on CD-ROM in an environment that deviates from the supported environments, please review the technical notes in the FAQ for updates on use of the applications. In addition to the Windows version of the ATLA Religion Database, ATLA also offers a DOS version on CD-ROM that has been successfully installed on various operating systems. The DOS version of the database contains the same data as the Windows version and is updated each time the Windows version is. In addition, the DOS version is available to ATLA RDB CD-ROM customers by request free of charge and may be installed at the same time the Windows version is installed. If you wish to have a copy of the DOS version of the database sent to your institution in addition to the Windows version, please contact the ATLA Sales department.

How do I install the Windows version on a Windows 2000 network?

ATLA is aware of problems associated with installing the Windows version of the ATLA Religion Database to a Windows 2000 network. These problems typically have to do with permission settings placed on User group profiles. Users of the ATLA Religion Database on CD-ROM must be given read-write permissions in order to use the database, and the only way ATLA is currently aware of to do this is to give patrons who access the database full control to the Windows or WinNT folder on the local workstation (not the network). Giving permission to the Windows folder allows users to access the *.sys and *.dll files necessary to run the ATLA Religion Database on a Windows 2000 network. Adjusting these permission settings does not allow users access to the entire C: drive; it only allows access to the Windows/WinNT folder. Additionally, you may wish to consult with your network administrators who will be able to create a System Policy on your Windows 2000 Domain Controller (through the Users and Computers section in the Active Directory) that will prohibit users from altering files in the Windows/WinNT directories.

If you are experiencing difficulties accessing the ATLA Religion Database as a User or Guest group user, please perform the following steps to give your patrons full control permissions on the local computer the ATLA Religion Database is installed on.

Part One:

1. From your local machine, sign on to your domain as Administrator.
2. Go to the Control Panel.
3. While in the Control Panel, select Administrative Tools.
4. While in Administrative Tools, select Computer Management.
5. From within Computer Management, select Local Users and Groups
6. Highlight Group.
7. Right Click on Group, choose New Group. Name this group ATLA, and click Add (This will take a moment, as the computer is searching for all possible users. Be certain that your DOMAIN name is selected in the Look In box).
8. Add any users you wish to be able to access the ATLA Religion Database to ATLA group (you may select multiple users at one time by selecting the first name, and then holding down the shift and down arrow key to highlight multiple users).
9. Choose Add.
10. Choose OK.
11. Choose Create. This will create your group ATLA with all of your users from the domain.

Part Two:

1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. From within Windows Explorer, select the C drive.
3. Locate the WinNT or Windows (depending on which version of Win2K you have) directory found on the C drive.
4. Right Click on WinNT/Windows directory.
5. Select Properties.
6. Go to Security tab.
7. Select Add.
8. Make sure your LOCAL computer is selected in the Look In box, and select the group ATLA.
9. Check/Select the top box, "Full Permissions" to give the group ATLA full control permissions.
10. Click Apply, then OK.
11. Log off as Administrator.
12. Log on as one of your user accounts (which should be a member of the group ATLA) to check that the permissions have been granted.
