ATLA has begun an ambitious project to index retrospectively as many
as possible of the 130+ periodical titles currently in ATLA's RDB
that predate the advent of Religion Index One (RIO), 1949
to the present. Many titles that commenced publication in 1940 or later
will be indexed. Earlier titles will be indexed as time and resources
permit.
The selected titles in this group will be indexed in conformity with
current RIO (article) practices. Review indexing will be limited
for the most part to book reviews that are 1,000 or more words in
length. A particular goal of this project aims at comprehensive name
authority work: the fullest form of a personal name, with titles and, if
known, birth and death dates, will be established. Comprehensive
indexing for each periodical will render such significant titles as Journal
of Biblical Literature, Church History, Catholic Biblical Quarterly, and
Journal of the American Academy of Religion [Journal of the
National Association of Biblical Instructors] vastly more
accessible, substantially enhancing the "depth-dimension" of
ATLA's Religion Database. The project is slated for completion in
three years, with an official startup date of September 1, 2002.
Libraries in the Greater Chicago area will provide primary access to the
texts; issues that are locally unavailable will be obtained through
interlibrary loan and, perhaps, the courtesy of the ATLA institutional
consortium.
Funding
for the project is provided by annual grants from participating ATLA
institutions; 94 have pledged as of May 2003. Pioneering work by
Association members Rev. Elmer J. and Betty A. O'Brien, and Rev. Ellis
E. O'Neal, Jr., on pre-1949 periodicals has been ingredient in
identifying the periodicals to be canvassed by RIP.
