Professional Development Opportunities beyond ATLA

This is a list of web sites for organizations or schools offering continuing professional development opportunities to librarians. The agencies are arranged under three headings:

The list is not meant to be exhaustive, and we welcome additional suggestions of web sites to add to the list.

ALA-affiliated

American Libraries Datebook
The online version of the Datebook column in American Libraries. Includes conferences, institutes, workshops, and continuing education programs offered across the United States and internationally.
Association for Library Collections and Technical Services
Events, institutes, courses related to the work of librarians involved in the acquisition, cataloging, classification and preservation of library materials.
Association of College & Research Libraries
Conferences, webcasts, institutes and workshops related to the work of academic library professionals serving the higher education community. Annual institutes are: "Institute for Information Literacy Immersion Program" and "ACRL/Harvard Leadership Institute". National conference held every two years.
Library & Information Technology Association
Programs, forums and regional institutes concerning all aspects of technology in libraries. "LITA National Forum" is held annually.
Library Administration and Management Association
Workshops, programs, national and regional institutes concerning all elements related to library administration. National Institute is held every two years. One-day workshops on a wide variety of topics can be scheduled at the regional level.
Reference & User Services Association
Programs and teleconference events related to the delivery of reference and information services to library users.

Library Schools

Drexel College of Information Science & Technology
Offers a variety of on-site and online continuing professional education seminars and workshops.
Rutgers School of Communication, Information and Library Studies
Offers seminars, courses, institutes and customized in-house training on a wide variety of topics; settings vary from campus to conference centers to on-line.
Simmons Graduate School of Library & Information Science
Offers a wide variety of institutes, workshops and courses at the Simmons campus, on-line and at other sites in New England.
University of Maryland College of Information Studies
Offers a few on-site seminars and workshops with an emphasis on utilizing the Internet.
University of South Carolina College of Library and Information Science
A few on-site seminars are offered.
University of Texas at Austin Graduate School of Library and Information Science
Offers a few on-site and web courses.
University of Toronto Faculty of Information Studies
Offers a wide variety of on-site and web-based courses including courses that can be applied toward six different continuing education certificate programs.
University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Library & Information Studies
Offers a variety of on-site and online courses.
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Information Studies
Offers a variety of on-site and online workshops.

Other

Association of Research Libraries/Organizational Learning Services
A variety of workshops, with an emphasis on management skills, offered nationally and online. Libraries and consortia can also schedule on-site and custom-designed workshops. ARL workshops tend to run 2-14 days in length.
The Foundation Center
On-site (in a variety of locations) and virtual courses related to grant-seeking and proposal writing. Some courses are free.
Information Today
Links to conferences related to technology in libraries.
Institute of Museum and Library Services
Lists conferences related to the societal role of libraries and museums. Annual conference titled "Webwise."
LOEX Clearinghouse for Library Instruction
Hosts annual conference related to library instruction. A western counterpart is:

OCLC-affiliated Networks
Links to the state and regional networks across the world that provide support, training and OCLC services. Each group provides a wide variety of on-site and/or distance learning opportunities.
OCLC Institute
Offers courses on cutting-edge librarianship topics.
Off-Campus Library Services Conference
Conference offered every 1-2 years for those who provide library services to adult learners located at a distance from the main campus.
State/Regional Library Association Guide
Links to all state and regional library association web sites.
