Fifty-fourth meeting

April 11, 2003

The spring meeting of the Tennessee Theological Library Association was held at the Disciples of Christ Historical Society, Nashville, Tennessee, and hosted by Director of Library and Archives Sara Harwell. Members present were Carisse Berryhill, Jill Brown, Pat Brown, Judy Butler, Marie Byers, Eileen Crawford, Jim Dunkly, Steve Edscorn, Barbara Freese, Steve Gateley, Betsy Grant, Sara Harwell, Bill Hook, David Howard, Amy Limpitlaw, Scott McDermott, Wade Osburn, Sheila Owen, Dorothy Parks-Evins, David Roebuck, Sarah Schaller-Linn, Bill Sumners, Kathy Sylvest, Maggie Tarpley, Mat Trotter, Eunice Wells, Jane Williamson, Carolyn Wilson, and Anne Womack.

Registration and refreshments began at 9:00 a.m. President Betsy Grant welcomed members including two new ones – Barbara Freese and Steve Edscorn – and guest Maggie Tarpley. Sara Harwell introduced the president of DCHS Peter Morgan who offered words of welcome, a prayer, and a brief history of DCHS.

Next, Harwell introduced Greg Taylor, editor of New Wineskins magazine, whose presentation was entitled “A Print Magazine Fighting Off the E-Magazine Downward Spiral.” Much discussion concerning publishing e-magazines followed. Greg continued when the group moved downstairs for an online demonstration of New Wineskins online.

In the remaining time before lunch, Harwell introduced the group to DCHS’ new automated archives cataloging system – Endeavor’s ENCompass.

Following lunch and fellowship in the Scarritt-Bennett Center, President Betsy Grant called the business meeting to order.

Secretary Kathy Sylvest presented the minutes which were approved following notation of one correction.

Treasurer David Howard presented the Treasurer’s Report which was approved as read.

Grant called for old business. The consideration of an ATLA grant for a workshop related to OCLC’s Connexion client was postponed because OCLC delayed its release. Related to the exchange program funding, Carisse Berryhill and Bill Hook reported that the Wabash Center was not theoretically in agreement with our intentions for exchange and that no other funding sources outside TTLA seemed to be available at present. Eileen Crawford noted that BETH continues to be interested in an exchange program with TTLA and the president plans to attend the annual ATLA meeting in 2004. She suggested we may be able to host him then and focus on sending a TTLA member in 2005. Berryhill and Hook agreed to continue investigating possibilities for grant funding and report at the fall meeting.

Grant called for new business. The nominating committee report was presented by Chair Jane Williamson. As there were no nominations from the floor, the report was approved electing the following officers: Vice President/President Elect Carisse Berryhill, Secretary Kathy Sylvest, Treasurer Steven Edscorn.

Bill Hook referred to Dennis Norlin’s letter regarding the ATLA database and asked how many present were subscribers through EBSCO and First Search. Discussion followed about TTLA considering a consortial arrangement. Hook agreed to investigate the possibilities with both vendors.

Grant reported that Tom Stokes had offered to host a TTLA meeting and opened the floor for volunteers. It was agreed that Grant or President Elect Harwell would contact Stokes.

A motion was made and approved and the business meeting was adjourned.

Next, Bill Hook introduced the members to the ETANA Project – Electronic Tools and Ancient Near Eastern Archives, www. Etana.org. Discussion followed.

Following reports from the libraries, Grant thanked Harwell and her coworker for hosting the meeting and introduced Harwell as our new president. As her first official act, Sara moved to adjourn!

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Sylvest
Secretary
