Editorial Manager, Digital Products

The Editorial Manager, Digital Products, is responsible for the overall quality and editorial scope of ATLA’s (American Theological Library Association) digital product offerings. The EM ensures that the content within ATLA’s products fully meets the needs of individuals studying religion and theology. The EM is accountable for defining and maintaining high standards for bibliographic quality and topical analysis within ATLA’s offerings.   

The EM leads an editorial team of highly skilled subject matter experts with advanced degrees in subdisciplines within religion, religious studies or theology. This team is responsible for the accurate and timely creation of original and complex bibliographic records based on a knowledge and understanding of nationally-recognized metadata standards. This team is also responsible for identifying new sources of content for inclusion in ATLA’s offerings.

The EM has a proven track record of collaborative leadership, drawing on a range of skills including the ability to engage and to inspire staff, to develop staff and team skills, to set clear goals and priorities, to take decisive action to establish policy or to define recommended course of action, and to effectively manage risk. 

Essential duties

Staff Management:

  • Owns the organization of reporting staff, including distribution of duties, tasks, roles, and responsibilities to support effective and efficient workflows.
  • New staff: Hiring, on-boarding, training, and initial assessment.
  • Performance management: Complete reviews in accordance with ATLA policies. Ensure staff receive accurate and timely feedback, especially regarding areas of strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Ensure staff accurately complete timecards and approve same. 

Editorial & Taxonomy Management

  • Ensure overall editorial policies for journal handling and taxonomy management associated with ATLA’s digital products align with industry standards, support organizational goals, and meet customer expectations. 
  • Ensure all policies are documented and available to staff.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with publishers and providers of content.
  • Identifies sources of content that meet market requirements for our current offerings and for new initiatives. 

Vendor Management (Content, Technical, other):

  • Monitor the quality of the work to ensure agreed upon standards are met.
  • Communicate regularly with the vendors to ensure work is on track and to resolve any issues.
  • Provide specifications and requirements to technical teams to support enhancements, bug fixes, or other changes to the tools used by the editorial team. 

Financial Management:

  • Ensure the team stays within budget for assigned work.
  • Effectively forecast the volume of material the department will receive within agreed upon timeframes in support of budget forecasting and management.
  • Establish clear business metrics to track and to report progress of team.  
  • Champion cost-reduction efforts by identifying options to increase efficiency and productivity while maintaining quality.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of current best practices and standards associated with CVs and taxonomies. Preference will be given to candidates with experience supporting online database services.
  • Minimum of three years leading an editorial team; demonstrated experience developing staff skills.
  • Advanced degree or equivalent experience in an area of the humanities, social sciences, or library sciences. Preference will be given to candidates with concentrations in religion, religious studies, theology, philosophy, or library science.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the scholarly communications landscape.
  • Intermediate knowledge of the MS Office Suite, especially Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Excellent public speaking and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated high degree of professionalism; earns trust and maintains confidences. 
  • Highly collaborative leadership style.
