Coordinator of Digital Humanities in Newman Studies

Regular, Full Time, Staff Appointment

The Coordinator of Digital Humanities in Newman Studies will provide leadership for the further development of the Newman Scholars Commons at the Newman Library, which exists to support scholars in the exploration of new methodologies enabled by digital technology, the analysis and management of complex data, and the sharing of research results.  

Reporting to the Director of NINS, the Coordinator of Digital Humanities in Newman Studies will be responsible for the maintenance and continual improvement of the Newman Scholars Commons, so as to enable innovative research in the field of Newman studies. The Coordinator of Digital Humanities in Newman Studies will also collaborate with librarians at Duquesne University and other functional experts to design and plan the rollout of services based on the needs and priorities of the scholarly community. In consultation with other disciplines and functional specialists, the Coordinator of Digital Humanities in Newman Studies will identify and evaluate emerging tools and methodologies to integrate into the Scholars Commons, and will consult on the identification, acquisition, and/or creation of digital collections appropriate to specific research projects, including providing expert evaluation of existing digital resources.  

The successful candidate must have an advanced degree in the humanities, social sciences, data curation, or library science with a minimum of 2-3 years experience working on digital scholarship. Familiarity with nineteenth century Catholicism, and awareness of John Henry Newman’s life and work, is strongly preferred but not required. The successful candidate should be able to articulate how their work will contribute to the fulfillment of NINS’ mission.   

The Search Committee will evaluate the candidate's demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills; evidence of significant and progressively responsible experience engaging with and managing digital scholarly projects and services; ability to advise on hardware and software purchasing and implementation; demonstrated understanding of the scholarly applications of digital tools, metadata standards, data encoding standards, and data management and curation practices; ability to work cooperatively and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues; and evidence of engagement at a national or international level with digital scholarship initiatives. The position will require regular and engaged collaboration with the leadership team at Crivella West Incorporated.

SALARY AND BENEFITS 

Appointment salary will be based on qualifications and experience. Benefits include health insurance and paid time off.

The Library of The National Institute for Newman Studies comprises two complementary parts: a physical print book library, housed at the Gailliot Center for Newman Studies, and a digital library and archive, housed in the Scholars Commons. Additionally, NINS owns and manages the popular online Newman Reader. 

The Library is seeking to hire a talented and forward-looking Coordinator of Digital Humanities in Newman Studies focused on engagement with digital scholarship. This new hire will work closely with existing staff members to further the mission and work of the National Institute for Newman Studies.
