Outreach Archivist


The Burke Library at Union Theological Seminary (Columbia University Libraries) seeks an Outreach Archivist to engage and collaborate with faculty and students from Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University Departments, Institutes, and Centers to process, develop, and provide expert access to the Burke Library’s archival collections for teaching, research, scholarship, and programming.  Working closely with the Public Services Librarian and the Collection Services Librarian, and reporting to the Head Librarian, the incumbent’s primary responsibilities include:

  1. Working closely with UTS and Columbia/Barnard faculty, students, and staff in course-based archival planning, teaching, events, orientations, exhibits, and digital projects;
  2. Leading the Burke Library’s archival access services for UTS, Columbia/Barnard, and visiting researchers;
  3. Overseeing the physical processing (arrangement and description) of the Burke Library’s archival and related collections, in coordination with CUL staff, graduate student interns, and other student assistants;
  4. Building print and digital archival collections, including born-digital collections, based on historic and emerging collection strengths, fostering productive donor relations in collaboration with the Head Librarian;
  5. Overseeing the accession of new collections;
  6. Coordinating archival data collection and reporting, and supplies orders.

Required education, training, skills, and experience:

  • MLS or PhD or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • MLS with formal coursework in archives administration or an M.A. in archival management, and two years’ related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Experience teaching and doing outreach with archives

  • Demonstrated initiative, accuracy, attention to detail, judgment, and ability to work both independently and in a highly collaborative environment

  • Excellent organizational, including project management, skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Must be able to lift and carry heavy boxes and must be able to climb ladders and stairs

Preferred education, training, skills, and experience:

  • Demonstrated experience or training in religious or theological studies, particularly in American and New York social and religious history
  • Demonstrated experience providing reference and research support in an archival setting
  • Working knowledge of historical research methodologies and experience with standard bibliographic and digital tools
  • Supervisory experience
  • Reading knowledge of at least one foreign language relevant to advanced research in theological, religious, or historical studies (e.g., German, Latin, Hebrew, Greek, etc.)
