Southwest Area Theological Library Association

The Southwest Area Theological Library Association (SWATLA) exists to promote cooperation and exchange of ideas among libraries in the Southwestern United States. The only requirement for participation is that a library be responsible for theological/religious studies collections. Participants include but are not limited to members of the American Theological Library Association (ATLA) in the region. SWATLA meets twice a year. Through these meetings and less formal contacts engendered by such meetings, the organization seeks to foster professional growth, institutional cooperation and the dissemination and sharing of information

History of SWATLA

The first "Workshop" was held in January, 1989, sponsored by Austin Presbyterian, Episcopal Theological, and the GSLS at UT Austin. Fourteen institutions and thirty people registered for the two day event that started with a dinner and an evening meeting. The speakers the next day were Professor Loriene Roy on "Collection Evaluation." Professor Fran Miksa on "Developments in Subject Access" and Bob Walton on "Overview of Automation."

Dallas Theological and Southwestern Baptist hosted the next workshop in January of 1990. Following the workshop, a steering committee composed of Valerie Hotchkiss, Robert Ibach, Roger Loyd, and Genevieve Luna, drafted a Mission Statement and Organization Features, for the organization.

Upcoming SWATLA Meeting

Save the date for the Fall 2017 SWATLA meeting.  Due to the hurricane damage in Houston, the conference location has been shifted to Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and will be held October 20, 2017, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. This year is the rotation to meet with COSTS. 

Registration and Lunch will cost approximately $25. If you are interested in attending, please contact Craig Kubic.
