Regional Workshops

The ATLA 2012 Preservation Survey revealed members' interest in educational programs that address preservation issues for libraries and archives, including webinars, workshops, and conference programs. 

Popular topics identified for educational programs include:

  • Advocacy, fundraising and grant-writing
  • Digitization
  • Digital preservation
  • Disaster preparedness and recovery
  • Preservation management
  • Collections conservation

Regional Workshops 

ATLA is pleased to provide the opportunity for ATLA Regional Groups to host preservation workshops throughout the 2013-2014 membership year.

ATLA has worked with preservation consultants Liz Bishoff (The Bishoff Group) and Tom Clareson (LYRASIS) to develop in-person workshops for ATLA Regional Groups.  ATLA is pleased to provide funding for Liz Bishoff's and Tom Clareson's travel and participation in a Regional Group meeting to present one of the workshops below.  

Funding is limited - interested Regional Groups should contact the ATLA Member Programs department ( to express interest and confirm availability. 

The available workshops include:

Introduction to Preservation Planning

This workshop will provide attendees with information about the variety of activities included in a preservation program, including the nature of collections materials, environmental control, disaster preparedness and recovery basics, collections care and storage issues, grant writing and fundraising basics, and policy development for preservation.  This workshop will be offered as a half-day session.

Introduction to Digital Preservation

This workshop will explore strategies for digital preservation, introduce digital preservation standards, key elements of a digital preservation program and introduce current digital preservation services.  This workshop will be offered as a half-day session.

Care and Handling of Collections

This workshop will cover the basics of storage furniture and shelving practices; selecting materials for repair and treatment; treatment options; exhibit basics; and care issues for difficult formats.  This workshop will be offered as a half-day session.


ATLA Regional Groups can contact the Member Programs department ( to express interest in this program.  Please indicate the workshop of interest, possible dates for the Regional Group meeting, and location.  ATLA is pleased to provide funding for presenters' travel, hotel accommodations, and meals - Regional Groups will not be responsible for any speaker expenses, however meeting space, technology, and previously planned expenses for the meeting will be the responsibility of the Group.
