1,000 Women in Religion Update from Atla Annual

Atla hosted its first 1,000 Women in Religion Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at Atla Annual in Vancouver on Wednesday, June 12, 2019. This free hands-on workshop enabled attendees to become confident Wikipedia editors with the ability to add, edit, and enhance entries about important women in the field.

Overall, there were about sixteen people who attended the workshop. While the barriers are high when it comes to publishing articles to Wikipedia with as many articles getting rejected ten times before it’s published, we hope these sixteen people have learned the skills to enhance Wikipedia.

What’s Next?

The organizers are setting their sights on a workshop during AAR/SBL, partially supported by Atla. We also plan to offer some other events this fall. Stay tuned for updates on the Atla blog.

What is the 1,000 Women in Religion Project?

The 1,000 Women in Religion Project is a timely endeavor that seeks to add over 1,000 biographical entries about religious, spiritual, and wisdom women to Wikipedia, the largest encyclopedia in the world. The contributions of women in all fields of work, scholarship and life, including religion and spirituality, have gone under-recognized, across time and in our present-day context. Furthermore, this under-recognition, which is a form of gender bias, is reflected and reproduced in our commonly used sources of knowledge – in our history books, in our news media, even in our sacred texts.
