It features images of Norfolk Island which is a small Australian territory in the Pacific. The island is included in the Diocese of Sydney because of its colonial history. Pictured above is “an old Pitcairner” who is most likely a descendant of the ‘Bounty’ mutineers who were relocated to Norfolk.

The Mission Zone Fund was founded in 1902 by R.B.S. Hammond, to support the welfare of people in the inner city area. It was merged into the Anglican Home Mission Society (now Anglicare) in 1911. The Reverend Bernard George Judd, a student at Moore Theological College from 1941-1942, was ordained Deacon in 1942, Priest in 1943, and began his long ministry at St. Peter’s, East Sydney in 1947. Reverend Judd’s many active interests, including Secretary of the N.S.W. Council of Churches from 1957 and Director of Hammondville Homes from 1946, led to his being awarded the M.B.E. in 1973. In 1993 he was awarded the Medal in the Order of Australia for services to the community, particularly for his work with the NSW Council of Churches.

Nathaniel Jones (1861-1911) was born into a farming family at Whooton, Shropshire in 1861. He received 1st Class honours in Theology at Oxford and was ordained deacon by the Bishop of Ripon in 1886. He served as curate to Rev. Dr. Mitchell at New Worthy, Leeds, Lancashire with whom he became lifelong friends. Two months into his curacy, Jones developed chest problems culminating in pneumonia and made the decision to immigrate to Australia. He met his wife Grace on the ship sailing to Australia. After arriving in Melbourne, he was ordained as a priest in Melbourne on 27th May 1888 and appointed as priest at Tarnagulla, Newbridge, and surrounding area. The family remained in Tarnagulla until 1894, when Jones became Principal of Perry Hall, Bendigo. Whilst still at Perry Hall it was suggested that Jones apply for the position of Principal at Moore Theological College, Newtown. He commenced in that post in July 1897, following the death of the Reverend Bernard Schleicher. Jones was a well-respected member of the Sydney Diocese, as well as of the wider church community. In August 1910 Jones was admitted to hospital for major surgery. He passed away in May 1911, survived by his wife Gracie, and children Maisie and Stephen.
