Assistant Seminary Librarian
Delivers professional library services using multiple modes to a mixed population of students, faculty, alumni/ae, and the public. Shares responsibility with the Seminary Librarian to provide information literacy instruction and library services supporting courses taught at Lancaster Theological Seminary and Moravian Theological Seminary in Bethlehem, PA. Participates in maintaining the library’s print and electronic collections. Assists with all aspects of library operation in cooperation with the Seminary Librarian and coordinated with other library staff members.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide and foster excellent reference services to patrons
- Provide reference assistance in multiple modes
- Create and maintain library guides
- Track and evaluate reference queries to further develop tutorials and other library service offerings based on emerging needs and trending topics
- Plan, develop, implement, evaluate, and promote information literacy instruction
- Build effective collegial relationships with seminary faculty
- Collaborate with seminary faculty to create course guides
- Deliver information literacy instruction in classroom and small group settings
- Assist faculty with integrating information literacy instruction into their syllabi
- Collaborate with the Seminary Librarian on mapping and assessing information literacy skill development across all seminary degree programs
- Support the Seminary Librarian
- Participate in collection development activities for print theological collections housed at Lancaster Theological Seminary Library and Reeves Library at Moravian University
- Monitor and help maintain electronic resource discoverability and access for seminary students, faculty, and alumni/ae
- Contribute to the management of the Seminary Archives, the library’s Digital Archive, and the seminary’s records management program
- Collaborate on future innovations through gathering data about patron information behavior, assessing patron needs, and evaluating the usability of the library’s physical and virtual spaces
- Help oversee student workers
- Participate in a collegial teamwork environment and assist with overall library operation
- Attend to opening and closing procedures as needed
- Receive serials and new acquisitions as needed
- Catalog library materials and update bibliographic records as needed
- Contribute to interlibrary loan, course reserves, special projects, and library communication initiatives
Secondary Job Functions:
- Participate in seminary committees as required
- Attend library and seminary staff meetings
- Participate in professional development activities
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science is required and graduate theological education from an ATS-accredited school is strongly preferred; demonstrated organizational skills; high level proficiency with computers and technology; ability to manage multiple projects and priorities; ability to maintain focus with frequent interruptions; careful attention to detail; strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills; adept at working flexibly in a team environment; ability to interact positively with wide constituency; ability to work in a multicultural and diverse environment.
DESIRABLE SKILLS
Experience working in an academic library in one or more of the following areas: reference and user services, metadata and cataloging, rare books and special collections, archives, electronic resources, digital initiatives, or collection development; experience partnering with faculty on library instruction and information literacy initiatives; knowledge of pedagogical strategies and methodological approaches in theological education; experience with social media campaigns or other library communication and marketing strategies.
