Archives & Reference Librarian
Leads the development of the Northwest University Archives. Responsible for preservation, organization, access, and description of materials in the NU Archives. Contributes to collection development, instruction, and outreach for the library and archives. Functions as part of the library management team under the leadership of the Library Director. Full-time, 1 FTE.
Essential Functions
- Manages the Northwest University Archives, including selection, arrangement, metadata creation, digitization efforts, preservation of physical materials, and emergency preparedness for physical and digital acquisitions. Responsible for the quality and accuracy of digitization and metadata creation processes in the NU Archives and library catalog. Develops policy and procedure.
- Provides in-person and online reference assistance to patrons, including locating, retrieving, and accessing materials. Answers basic reference, informational, and directional questions.
- Oversee NU Archives website development. Responsible for evaluating and implementing digitization technologies. Automates and streamlines workflows.
- Performs collection development in assigned areas and works with other librarians to formulate collection policy.
- Collaborates with Cataloging Supervisor for training of student workers on archival projects.
- Maintains currency in the field through continuing education, attends library and campus meetings, and serves on University committees. Performs other duties as assigned.
- Represent the NU Archives at campus events and through marketing. Identifies University records with enduring value and builds cross-campus relationships for developing acquisition plans.
- Provides Library Instruction as needed.
Qualifications
- Earned master’s degree in library science, archival science, or another related field. Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) with a concentration or certification in archival studies, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience preferred.
- Two to three years professional experience in special collections, library technical services, or archives, preferably in an academic setting.
- Knowledge of and experience implementing archives principles, practices, and terminology. Experience with best practices in appraisal, description, digitization, preservation, and access. Demonstrated knowledge of metadata formats, standards such as Dublin Core, DACS, EAD, XML, HTML.
- Knowledge of data manipulation techniques such as scripting languages, regular expressions, macros, and Excel functions.
- Working knowledge of library and archival software such as DSpace, Koha, and OCLC WorldShare.
- Ability to communicate effectively, strong interpersonal skills.

Working Environment
- Work is generally performed indoors in a typical office setting.
- Some weekend/evening work is required.
- Frequently required to be in front of a computer screen for long periods of time.
Physical Demands
The functions are usually performed while sitting, but may involve some amount of time standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting (max. of 40 lbs.), walking, carrying, reaching, stretching, climbing, perform repetitive motions of the hands or wrists and other movements. The abilities of seeing, hearing, and speaking are also required.
Compensation
Dependent on education and experience, based on set compensation scale.
