Spotlight On: Titles for Worship, Sermon Preparation, Liturgy, and Music

Atla’s research tools contribute to diverse scholarship in many fields. Here, we highlight some of our titles dedicated to preparation for worship services, including sermons and homilies, liturgy, and music. Our tools include many resources on these topics and important related areas, such as practical theology, biblical studies, and pastoral theology.
Titles related to sermons and homiletics
Living Pulpit (preceding), published by The Living Pulpit Inc, and The Living Pulpit (Online) (succeeding), published by New York Theological Seminary, seek to gather the community of faithful communicators and reflect upon the impact that preaching is to have on our journey of faith, especially in our time that God has given us to serve and love. The journal represents a multitude of theological perspectives, and its goal is to be the place where different views become the medium of an expanded vision rather than occasions that divide us. Journal for Preachers, published by Journal for Preachers, Inc, is for preachers who want sermon material that is both thoughtful and useful. Each issue contains provocative articles on theological reflections, cultural issues, liturgical seasons, and social concerns — essays that feed profound and challenging preaching. Preaching, published by Preaching Resources, Inc, is a quarterly publication designed to equip and encourage pastors and church leaders to proclaim biblical truth. Articles include preaching tips, sermons for inspiration, illustrations, book reviews, and more. (Indexed in Atla Religion Database).
Homiletic: A Review of Publications in Religious Communication (preceding), published by Academy of Homiletics, and Homiletic (Online) (succeeding), published by Vanderbilt Divinity School, is a scholarly forum in homiletics and a review of publications in religious communication. Journal of the Evangelical Homiletics Society, published by Evangelical Homiletics Society, is a professional peer-reviewed international journal published twice yearly and contains articles on homiletics, book reviews, and sermons. Organized in 1997, the Evangelical Homiletics Society is an academic society established for the exchange of ideas related to the instruction of biblical preaching. Lectionary Homiletics, published by Luther Seminary, is a journal devoted to bringing together ideas from various preachers for sermons based on the lectionary of specific Sundays throughout the liturgical year. The articles in the journal also include theological reflections on the practices of preaching and worship, especially as congregations navigate being a church in 21st-century society and culture. Titles related to liturgy and music
Reformed Worship, published by CRC Publications, is a quarterly print magazine that provides practical help and support to worship planners. It has a global and ecumenical audience and welcomes articles and resources from a variety of contexts. (Indexed in Atla Religion Database).
Call to Worship: Liturgy, Music, Preaching and the Arts, published by the Office of Theology and Worship of the Presbyterian Church, offers insight and inspiration for pastors, church musicians, artists, and other worship leaders. Three thematic issues in each volume of Call to Worship include regular columns on liturgy, music, preaching, and the arts; additional liturgical ideas and resources; book and music reviews; and liturgical artwork. Liturgy, published by Taylor & Francis, is a quarterly resource for studying, preparing, and celebrating Christian worship. It offers practical help and reflections for educators, musicians, pastoral ministers, and parish liturgy committee members, as well as professors and seminarians. With each issue focusing on a different theme, Liturgy is prepared by a broad range of pastors, leaders, scholars, and writers who worship in faith. (Indexed in Atla Religion Database).
Jahrbuch für Liturgik und Hymnologie, published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, publishes research contributions from the fields of liturgy and hymnology as well as progress, publication, and literature reports. The authors are concerned with both modern and historical matters relating to these fields. (Indexed in Atla Religion Database, full text available in Atlas).
Svenskt Gudstjänstliv, published by Centrum för Teologi och Religionsvetenskap, Lunds Universitet, is Sweden’s only periodical publication for research on liturgy, church art, church music, and preaching. All articles are peer-reviewed by two independent reviewers. The review department monitors new literature within the yearbook’s areas of interest. (Indexed in Atla Religion Database).
The Caecilia (ceased), published by the American Society of St. Cecilia, was published from 1874 until 1965 when it merged with the journal The Catholic Choirmaster to become the new periodical Sacred Music. It is an essential resource for church musicians, professionals, and amateurs interested in restoring the sacred in Catholic liturgical life. (Indexed in Atla Religion Database).
The Gregorian Review: Studies in Sacred Chant and Liturgy (ceased), published by Gregorian Institute of America, is a bimonthly journal specializing in Gregorian chant, covering the practice and study of this musical form, as well as related topics of interest to practitioners.
